AN ALTERNATIVE FOR SUN BATH!!!

Sun tanning or simply tanning is the process whereby skin color is darkened or tanned. The process is most often a result of exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun or from artificial sources, such as a tanning bed, but can also be a result of windburn or reflected light. Some people use chemical products which can produce a tanning result without exposure to ultraviolet radiation. Casual exposure to the sun has moderate beneficial impact, including the production of vitamin D by the body; but excessive exposure to ultraviolet rays has health effects, including possible sunburn and even skin cancer as well as depressed immune system function and increased risk of accelerated aging. Some people tan or sunburn more easily than others. This may be the result of different skin types and natural skin color, and these may be as a result of genetics.

Melanocytes produce two types of melanin: pheomelanin (red) and eumelanin (very dark brown). Melanin protects the body by absorbing solar radiation. Excessive solar radiation causes direct and indirect DNA damage to the skin and the body naturally combats and seeks to repair the damage and protect the skin by creating and releasing further melanin into the skin's cells. The cumulative damage caused by UV radiation can lead to premature skin aging (wrinkles, lax skin, brown spots, and more), as well as skin cancer. Sunless tanning (also known as UV-free tanning, self tanning, spray tanning (when applied topical, or fake tanning) refers to the application of chemicals to the skin to produce an effect similar in appearance to a suntan. The most effective sunless tanning is beta-carotene because it is natural and permanent, and at the same time act as permanent defense against UV light-mediated skin damage unlike most sunless tanning products, and improves tanning. Also, carotenoids (like beta-carotene) have been linked to more attractive skin tone than suntan. Another sunless-tanning product is tanning pills which contain canthaxanthin, which is most commonly used as a color additive in certain foods.

To avoid exposure to UVB and UVA rays, or in sunless seasons, some people darken their skin using sunless tanning. Some people use make-up to create a tanned appearance. Getting a tan especially during the summer season is the in thing to do because of the healthy. Self tanning is the most convenient alternative to sunbathing.Although tanning the natural way has its own benefits such as absorbing vitamin D while sun bathing, the downside is that sunbathers are more prone to ageing prematurely because of too much sun exposure. Therefore, getting your tan from a bottle is better than exposing your skin to early development of wrinkles and premature ageing.Sunless tanning gives a much better and even tan compared to sunbathing. Many self tanners use chemical fragrances which may cause skin allergies or may trigger asthma. The ingredients known to offer appropriate protection are titanium dioxide, zinc oxide, or avobenzone.

Most sunless tanning products do not contain sunscreen, therefore, they do not provide any protection against ultraviolet rays when the person is outdoors. To offer protection against UV rays the tanner should contain an SPF. Tanners can stain clothes. It is therefore important to look or fast drying formulas and wait around 10 to 15 minutes for the product to dry before dressing. Self tanning products come in various form such as gels, lotions, sprays, creams and mousse. One just has to choose the best self-tanner that is compatible with their skin type. The most important thing to do prior to application of the product is to exfoliate the skin to rid of the skin of the dead skin cells and dirt. Exfoliate about 5 hours prior to application so it’s best to exfoliate in the morning and then apply the sunless tanning product at night.
